In this article and subsequent articles, we will look into the construction process in depth, discussing the details of each part of the process in depth.
MOBILISATION OF THE TEAM
Mobilisation refers to the act of marshalling and organising and making ready for use or action. In this case, it refers to the activities that should be carried out after the client has selected the contractor, but before the contractor begins any work on site.
The construction team as discussed earlier includes: the contractor, the consultant team (engineers, architect, designers etc) and the client.
Contractor
During mobilisation the contractor might:
- Undertake the supply of building materials
- Hire workers
- Supervising and seeing to it that the construction work is done according to specifications
- Managing health and safety on the site
- Managing costs and time on site
- Partly financing the project according to the contract agreement with a view to making a reasonable profit at the end of the work
- Undertake to alter a building structure or do any other work connected with it that the client may require to be carried out
- Where the contractor does not have his own labour he must obtain authorization from the client or other appropriate third party, to hire workmen for employment for the purposes of executing the work.
- Arrange for the statutory utilities to provide the necessary water, power supplies required for construction activities.
In their role as principal contractor:
- Ensure that workers are provided with suitable site induction, training and information to be able to work without undue risk to their health or safety.
- Prepare an initial construction phase plan.
- Develop the site waste management plan.
